How to choose an electric heater, electric stove for a sauna and bath.

Modern electric sauna stoves are perhaps the safest and most predictable. They do not take up much space, do not require complex smoke exhaust systems and can be used even in ordinary apartments, if there is a corner for arranging your own mini-sauna. Many hardened steamers already admit that such heaters are in no way inferior to wood-burning ones.

In our market, Finnish and Russian stoves are considered the most popular. The former are valued for their aesthetic design and high thermal performance, while the latter are attractive because they are relatively inexpensive. Therefore, in our review there will be a majority of them. It is worth noting that unusual for a real sauna, but functional stoves with automatic steam supply. They know how to create the climate of a classic and Russian bath, independently selecting temperature and humidity conditions. Electric heaters with a steam generator are ideal for those who love a variety of treatments.

Electric oven design

The modern market offers a wide selection of electric heaters of different performance and design (open and closed models), so any bath attendant will be able to choose the best option for himself based on financial capabilities, personal tastes and preferences, as well as room layout.

For large steam rooms, it is preferable to choose corner stoves equipped with special brackets, or designer open models with an open grate for installation in the very center.

An electric furnace can have an elegant metal body or a lining made of natural material - soapstone, soapstone, coil and other rocks. They give the electric heater not only an aesthetic appearance, but also unique properties:

  • No convective temperature changes.
  • Beneficial effects on the body of bath attendants.
  • Long-term heat accumulation, maintaining a comfortable temperature in the steam room.
  • Protection from direct infrared rays.
  • Creating a uniform thermal background in the steam room/washing room.

Note!

Before purchasing an electric heating device, you must familiarize yourself with the product’s certificate of conformity, which indicates its quality and high fire safety.

Some models of electric heaters can operate in two modes: standby and full power. This is important to consider before purchasing heating equipment.

The electric furnace operates from the mains power supply, and the main structural elements of the heating equipment are:

  • Electric heating element.
  • Metal body.
  • Thermal insulation.

The body of the electric furnace from most manufacturers is made of metal, the thickness of which is no more than 4 mm. Inside the heater there are ventilation channels that ensure maximum heating of the equipment and good heat transfer.

The stove body is filled with stones of different shapes, sizes and types, which are designed for quick and high-quality heating of the room. Most electric heaters use steel sheets arranged one behind the other as a heat insulator.

Features of installing an electric heater

The installation procedure requires the fulfillment of a number of requirements, primarily related to fire safety. All this is regulated by SNiP.

SNiP 41-01-2003. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning. File for download.

In addition, all necessary information must be indicated in the manufacturer's instructions. It is better to entrust the procedure itself to a specialist, since you will have to deal with high voltage, but if you wish, you can familiarize yourself with the basic requirements. According to standards, the stove should be placed in the corner closest to the door. In addition, today mounted models and devices are produced that can be placed in the center of the steam room (provided that all safety standards are met).

    Safety guards for electric heaters

    Safety guards for electric heaters

As for the installation itself, all electric furnaces essentially consist of the same elements connected by cables. The electrical circuit is not complicated: the input terminals of the controller receive electricity from the network, and the output terminals are connected to other cables leading to the heat generator.

Note! If the design provides for a steam generator, then separate wires should be drawn from the control panel to it.

There are certain rules for installing each of the elements.

Furnace body

Inside the housing there are heating elements, as well as their connection points. If the stove is designed to work with stones, then it cannot be turned on without them, as the heaters will simply break. Before laying, the stones should be thoroughly washed (by the way, their sizes are also regulated - usually 6-9 mm). The heating rate of the steam room largely depends on these dimensions.

Remote Control

The operation of the heating device is controlled using the remote control. Sensors report changes in operation. When installing the remote control, please adhere to the following requirements.

Control panel mounting options

  1. The remote control (if it is not built-in) must be installed in a room at room temperature.
  2. It is recommended to lay the cables during the construction of the walls.
  3. The wires from the remote control are pulled to the electrical panel and connected to a separate switch. The rating of the latter must correspond to the power of the heater.
  4. Cables from sensors cannot be routed in the same wall penetration.
  5. The presence of an RCD in the circuit is mandatory.
  6. If the cable is pulled through the wall (to connect the remote control to an adjacent room), then you need to make a hole in the right place and install a tube made of non-flammable material there. The cable is pulled through this tube, after which the hole is sealed with cement (or any other non-flammable material).

Each of the cables must be solid, that is, several sections cannot be connected together for extension. The location of the sensors is indicated in the manufacturer's instructions, but, as a rule, they are mounted above the shelves, above the heater and above the front door.

Grounding

A grounding terminal is provided at the connection point for the electric furnace. It - grounding - must be installed in accordance with GOST.

GOST 12.1.030-81. Electrical safety. File for download.

GOST 12.1.030-81

If this is not possible, you need to ground it, that is, connect the ground wire to the neutral terminal of the distribution panel.

Wire cross-section

An electric oven is a fairly powerful device, which means that the cable used for connection must correspond to the kilowatts consumed, otherwise a short circuit will occur as a result of it burning out. To select the correct cross section, please refer to the table below.

Electric sauna stove: reviews

IMPORTANT! Most consumers in their reviews pay attention to the simplicity and ease of use, good steam generation, fast heating and small dimensions of the ovens, which free up space.

Users made a special mention of the ability to choose different designs. According to the owner of a sauna chain, who chose Narvi products, this is a big plus, as is the affordable price of its models.

Others like the fact that electric sauna stoves are made primarily of stainless alloys , which guarantees their durability .

Among the “ideal” models of electric sauna stoves are, for example, SAWO Cumulus CML-60 NB, Narvi NM, SAWO Tower TH3-60 NB.

Many admit that they have chosen Finnish stoves. But there are also those who appreciate the merits of domestic products.

In particular, about the Kristina Classic electric heater, manufactured, it is said that the tape heater in it is not afraid of water , so it can be poured without fear.

Other users see Russian electric heaters as a “memory of a tank” and prefer European design.

Another category of consumers pays attention to the possibility of using a sauna stove in the “Russian bath” mode. One of them says that he is very pleased with the capabilities of the Swedish Tylo Combi oven with controlled humidity and temperature.

As for the minuses , the most often mentioned are the high power consumption and the considerable cost of high-quality models.

Almost everyone considers a remote control

Selection of oven

Domestic models of heaters, as a rule, cost less, but are inferior in design and reliability.

To understand how to choose the right electric heater for a sauna, you need to calculate the volume of the steam room.

  • It is believed that a 1 kW stove heats 1 cubic meter in a room well.
  • If there are windows or uninsulated walls, a lot of heat escapes through them, so for calculation it is worth taking the figure 1.2 kW/m3.
  • The price of the most budget electric sauna heaters starts from 4,500 rubles. For example, for this price you can buy a Finnish Sawo sauna stove for a steam room with a volume of no more than 2.5 m3 (about a room 1.9 m high with walls 1 * 1.3 m).

Budget stove option
Budget stove option

  • If the furnace power is less than 3 kW, it is connected to a regular 220 volt network. More powerful models are usually connected via a 380 volt network.
  • When installed in an apartment building, the maximum permissible power for wiring should not exceed 6 kW. If you are taking a powerful stove, it is worth obtaining permission and installing new appropriate wiring.
  • The stove must be purchased, and not made with your own hands. Make sure it has safety certificates and timer on/off functions and temperature control.
  • Since a large amount of heat comes from an electric sauna heater, the steam room should be large enough to lie in. That is, the minimum length is 1.7-2 meters. It is contraindicated to be in a vertical position in such a sauna.

Electric furnaces with different weights of stones

Manufacturers offer the following options:

  • samples with heaters weighing 20-40 kg are perfect for a home bath designed for 4-5 people. Inexpensive, effective and easy to install, they warm up in half an hour, emit heat for a long time and evenly;
  • models with stone weights in the range of 60-120 kg are designed for larger rooms; they warm up in 1.5-2 hours. You can add water at any time, without restrictions on quantity;
  • If we are talking about electric stoves with heaters weighing 200-280 kg, then these models are intended for public steam rooms and saunas with a volume of several tens of cubic meters.

Before purchasing, you need to compare the parameters of the bath, power, and other important indicators of the electric furnace. You should not buy a model with excessive power, but it is also better not to buy a sauna stove that is weak for your volume.

Pros and cons of electric stoves for baths and saunas

The fact that the electric furnace is made of metal is the first advantage of this type. Other advantages arise from the fact that electricity is converted directly into thermal energy. Just compare it with firewood, which is full of problems and debris, not to mention the fact that the wood-burning stove itself cannot be mobile - it is tied to the chimney.

Yes, electric stoves for steam saunas are mobile ; they only need a sheet of non-flammable material underneath floor-standing models, or they don’t need anything at all if the model is suspended.

IMPORTANT! No chimneys, no debris, and with proper grounding, fire safety is higher than that of gas furnaces.

The numerous advantages of electric stoves can be completely offset by the fact that electricity is an expensive resource . Therefore, those who prefer inexpensive solutions should pay attention to other options. But there are also trade-offs. After all, the power of a stove that can be installed in an apartment is quite comparable to the power of an electric kettle and less than the power of some steam irons. But the sauna, which such a stove will heat, will be designed for no more than two people.

The second disadvantage is the slight difficulty with wiring. It’s better to invite an electrician who will install three phases if you took a 380-volt oven, and will determine the suitability of the existing wiring and do the grounding. But there are stoves with 220 volts, and this is the usual voltage in a household network.

If we talk about whether an electric heater is good for a sauna in a Russian bath, then a lot depends on the traditional ideas of its owner. Take a look at our articles about the Russian bath (see links above) - they talk a lot about why a metal stove is physically unable to provide the required conditions , and an electric sauna stove is no exception to this rule.

At the same time, among people who are less scrupulous about tradition, there is a widespread opinion that electric stoves are quite suitable for a sauna and a bath at the same time, the main thing is that there is a built-in steam generator and fine-tuning of temperature and humidity , allowing you to switch from Finnish to Russian bath mode.

Video on the topic

This video talks about why most electric heaters are not suitable for a Russian bath, but adds information about the extremely few types of stoves that are quite suitable.

By the way, we still have not touched upon such an important issue as the country of production. But it is precisely by this criterion that sauna equipment is often purchased.

helo

In the last issue of our magazine, we began a story about the products of the Saunatec concern (HELO brand) - a company that has been producing and selling electric, wood-burning stoves, steam generators and related products for saunas and baths for almost a century. In this issue the story will be about one of the most amazing inventions of Saunatec - thermos stoves.

In 1992, Saunatec invented the first electric thermos heater, EverReady, which served as the prototype for the modern SAUNATONTTU, one of the most sophisticated and functional models of thermos stoves.

In the HELO model range there are two models of thermos stoves (the walls and lid of which are thermally insulated) - HELO SAUNATONTTU (Finnish bath gnome) and HELO RONDO. These ovens offer functionality that no other oven can provide. Firstly, a large number of stones heated to a high temperature make it possible to achieve the regime of a real Russian bath with high humidity and moderate temperature. Secondly, you can enjoy all the luxury of steam immediately after a walk in the cold (or in the evening after work) and you don’t have to wait for the sauna to heat up, it is always waiting for you. Thirdly, due to the low temperature of the oven surface, the safety distance is only 10 mm. So thermos stoves are an excellent opportunity to implement any design ideas without the risk of getting burned. If we add to this the fact that such stoves almost completely lack hard infrared radiation from heated metal surfaces, then there is no alternative to thermos stoves.

The thermos oven has two operating modes - standby mode and full power mode. In standby mode, the oven heats the stones to a temperature of 150 - 250°C, which, taking into account the large number of stones (approx. 100 kg), means a colossal accumulated thermal energy that the oven releases when you open the lid and splash water on the stones. Full power mode is used during a direct visit to the bathhouse. You can achieve the maximum effect by turning on the stove at full power for just 10-15 minutes before visiting the sauna (compared to 40-60 minutes required for conventional electric heaters and 4-6 hours required for brick stoves). This allows the stones (whose temperature reaches > 300 °C) to warm up even more, and you get very soft and light steam in a very short time.

The use of thermos stoves solves the main problem of a bathhouse - how to produce soft steam (and for this you need to heat a large number of stones to a high temperature) without overheating (or drying out) the air. This difficult task is solved quite elegantly in HELO thermos ovens. The stones are heated in a closed, thermally insulated compartment to a high temperature (which is difficult for stones in conventional heaters, because they cool quickly, giving off heat to the air). Even with the lid open, there is minimal convection and minimal heat radiation, which ensures that the stones do not get cold. And this is a guarantee that you can get high humidity (more than 40%) at a temperature of 60-85° C. That is. the mode that was originally used by Russian people in the steam room. And not by chance! It has been scientifically proven that this regimen has the most beneficial effect on the body, maximally relaxing and cleansing it, and it is also beneficial for the respiratory organs. By the way, if you apply water to the stones of conventional electric stoves, you will hardly achieve 15% humidity in the steam room, because... the air is overheated.

A positive side effect of the thermos stove is that you can sit or lie quietly on the shelves without the risk of getting burned. In addition, the bathhouse dries well after use, which allows you to keep it clean and free of harmful bacteria.

The question often arises about the electricity consumption of thermos stoves. In standby mode, the oven operates at a power of 150-300 W, depending on the settings. This is comparable to the energy consumption of heated floors in the bathroom. At full power, the stove consumes the same amount of electricity as a conventional heater. But it is important to note that the time during which thermos stoves operate at full power is much shorter compared to traditional heaters.

If you use a thermos stove in a small hotel, you can always offer guests excellent steam at low energy costs.

Which models should you prefer when choosing a thermos stove? The Saunatec collection includes 2 thermos stoves: the new HELO RONDO and the well-known “bath gnome” HELO SAUNATONTTU.

HELO RONDO is an evolution of thermos stoves: it has a round shape, an elegant rotating top lid that directs steam. The stylish wooden handle is the finishing touch that makes this stove stand out from the crowd. Soft LED lighting of the stones creates a special atmosphere inside the steam room. This stove can be built into shelves according to the latest world fashion, which will allow you to use the sauna space more rationally and have a more uniform temperature distribution at the height where you steam. In addition, the area of the shelves increases accordingly, making it more convenient to use the bathhouse. Separately, it is necessary to say about the control panel. It is from the new MIDI series, designed for installation inside a bathhouse (included in delivery). With its help, you can easily set the temperature of the stones in standby mode (150 - 250 ° C) and maximum power mode (250 - 300 ° C), and you can also program the operating time of the furnace in maximum power mode (0-6 hours). Using the HELO MIDI remote control you can also control the lighting in the steam room (max. 100 W). The remote control displays the temperature of the stones, operating time and temperature in the steam room on a digital display (an additional temperature sensor is required - an option).

HELO RONDO is a stove for those who understand a real Russian bathhouse. But at the same time, he doesn’t want to wait 6 hours for a traditional brick oven to warm up.

The SAUNATONTTU stove, developed by the famous Finnish designer Ristomatti Ratia, is the embodiment of the concept of Scandinavian design (representatives of which are marimekko, iittala, bang & olufsen, etc.) As the famous English designer James Irwin noted: “a clear and concise Nordic design is a reflection of the Scandinavian rigor of thought, which differs sharply from the creative chaos that reigns in the minds of Italians.” One of the hallmarks of Scandinavian design is the maximum functionality of each item. Saunatonttu is no exception. The gnome automatically turns on full power mode as soon as you open its lid. In standby mode, you can select different heating levels - from 150 to 300 W (the temperature of the stones inside the oven varies accordingly). The control panel is as convenient as possible for use inside the bathhouse. You can pick it up from the special wooden stand where it is located. The gnome is safe if there are children in the house - its outer surface practically does not heat up. The stove is ideal for installation in the corner of a bathhouse, while taking up minimal space. The safety distance is only 10mm, which means you can also integrate it into shelves without the risk of charring the wood. Thus, you can create an interior that will invariably attract bathhouse fans. And the soft lighting of the stones will create a cozy atmosphere inside the bathhouse. By the way, if you have a special electricity meter installed that takes into account the difference in the price of electricity at night and during the day, then the stove can be configured so that it operates in standby mode only at night.

If you ask whether thermos stoves are suitable for everyone, you will have to answer that they are definitely not. Just like other conceptual things. After all, if you like a “dry” sauna, then thermos stoves will not be able to satisfy you. Due to their design features, they give off little heat through convection and thermal radiation. But to the absolute majority of fans of the Russian bath, who know a lot about real steam, we can recommend these stoves.
