Sauna in the shape of a golden egg - Solar Egg

Design Features

A Scandinavian-style bathhouse is distinguished by its good quality, naturalness and practicality. After all, Swedes love everything natural and convenient in everyday life. This is how they approach the construction of a bathhouse. Such structures are constructed according to the convection principle. There is constant air movement here, which makes breathing much easier while in the steam room. Its design resembles an inverted glass, where a warm stream flows from below. Rising to the ceiling, it displaces cold air.

Today, the designs of Swedish baths have changed a little, but have retained this “inverted glass” principle. They are distinguished by their simplicity and small size, which allows you to build a structure with your own hands in a few hours. It is easy to place it both in the green area of a summer cottage and indoors: on the veranda, on the first floor of a country house, in the gym, in the attic, or make it part of an interesting bath project.

Bastu is distinguished by its practicality and ease of operation. Just press one button and the entire sauna mechanism starts working.

Here everyone can take a steam bath to their pleasure. Indeed, in such baths there are two types of steaming - dry and steam. But you won’t be able to get real steam, like in a Russian bathhouse.

My bathhouse

Bastu (buffet bath) became famous many centuries ago. The peoples who inhabited modern Sweden have been melting and steaming in it since the dawn of time.

What is special about this bath? In design, it looks like a Finnish sauna - a log house made of wood with a place for a firebox (hearth). But the bastu has flowing ventilation, the air in it does not stagnate, so it is much easier to breathe in this steam room.

Scandinavian steam rooms - sauna and bastu - are universally famous. However, in the heyday of church tyranny (the Middle Ages), steam rooms had a bad reputation. They were considered a breeding ground for infections and promiscuity. But the troubled times passed, and even the church recognized the usefulness and convenience of the Swedish bath - they are installed in the Vatican.

Natural wood is used to build the bastu. Preferred species are spruce and cedar. The nobility of cedar cannot be compared with anything. The cedar steam room has an orange-golden hue. Cedar practically does not emit resin. This property is highly valued. Its healing effect on the respiratory tract, heart and nervous system allows it to remain a leader among tree species used for steam rooms. The disadvantage is the high price of this tree. In rare cases, alder or aspen is used for a log house. But they will not replace the smell of pine needles. Only spruce and cedar basta have the aroma of the forest, the thick and rich smell of resins. They help you relax better when vaping, have phytoncidal properties, and return a person to the bosom of nature and naturalness.

What did a traditional Swedish bath look like? The design of the bath should allow air flow through the steam compartment. Therefore, the floor of the bathhouse had cracks, and the bathhouse rose above the surface of the ground. Heated light air filled the steam room, and cold air escaped through the cracks in the floor. This principle is called "inverted glass". In modern steam rooms it has been modernized, but its basics have been preserved. A constant air flow ensures good drying of the wood and prevents the formation of mold. The bastu contained a tub for dipping and a bed. Sometimes the steam room was located above the water, then, upon leaving the steam room, you could immediately plunge into the cool water of the Swedish lakes.

What does a modern bastu look like? Now a steam room can be installed even in an ordinary multi-storey building. The main thing is to ensure ventilation and access to utility systems. And of course no hearth. The steam room is heated by an electric oven. Often everything is automated. Push-button control. On the one hand, this makes kindling easier. Doesn't require much time to heat up. The Swedish bath becomes accessible and easy to use. On the other hand, the bathhouse flavor is lost. But this is a tribute that must be paid to progress.

Bastu is an excellent option for a steam room. Both the traditional old Swedish version and modern collapsible cabins have their own amatures. This is a bathhouse that has been tested for centuries.

Possible designs for Scandinavian baths

Despite the fact that such structures are small in size and characterized by their compactness, they can be easily expanded by creating an individual project with additional rooms in the bathhouse. If we consider a Scandinavian-style sauna, its total area is divided into 4 zones:

Bathhouse project

  • sauna with changing room;
  • kitchen;
  • restroom;
  • bedroom.

If we add a summer terrace to this project, we will get an excellent chalet-style bathhouse. Such a structure will become not only an interesting idea for a suburban area, but a real work of art. An Alpine-style bathhouse is a sign of the hospitality and success of the owners.

Also, a Swedish sauna is installed in a frame bath. After insulating the walls and finishing the facade, the structure is designed in any style. For example, baths in the half-timbered style will ideally combine not only brevity, but also the functionality of the design. The variety of roof slopes, the presence of a swimming pool, interesting solutions in the interior of the rooms - all this can be ideally combined with a Swedish bath.

The Swedish sauna used to look different. It had slots above the surface of the earth for constant air movement. Despite modernization, its foundation has been preserved.

Saunas are very popular and usually, if you go to a sauna, then they call it a Finnish sauna. But there are other types of saunas, which, erroneously, are also attributed to Finnish saunas. There are significant differences between them. One of the brightest representatives is the Swedish sauna. The Swedes themselves call their saunas “Basta”.

“Basta” is installed at home by many famous people and this is not without reason, since the Swedish sauna has its advantages over other baths. One of the biggest advantages is ease of use. When starting the sauna, just press a few buttons and it will be ready for use in a few minutes. The next advantage of the Swedish sauna is its dimensions, which allow installation in any, even the smallest, room. It is also very convenient that such a sauna can be very quickly dismantled and moved to another room.

Swedish sauna

Swedish technologists argue that it is necessary to use mineral fiber as a heat insulator, not foil. This technological feature allows you to avoid drying out the wood while using the sauna. The principle of the Swedish sauna is very simple and similar to the construction of a hood or an inverted glass.

External panels or timber are often used for construction, and wooden lining is used as cladding. A heat insulator – mineral fiber – is installed between the panels and the lining. Spruce or cedar wood is mainly used for construction. But it is worth paying attention to the fact that the spruce must be a slow-growing species. This ensures sufficient density of the wood, which is processed at high temperatures, i.e. heat treatment.

The moisture content of the wood should not exceed 6-7%, so when using wood with higher humidity, the wood will dry out during use and the structure will simply “lead.” The advantage of using cedar is that this type of wood contains less resin than many spruce species. Thus, whether to choose spruce or cedar depends only on the customer’s preferences, i.e. you.

Cedar wood differs from spruce wood in color and smell in a Swedish sauna, so when choosing the type of wood, compare them with each other and choose the one you like. When arranging benches, beds, racks, floors, pay attention to the density of the wood. After all, the greater the density, the faster the material heats up and retains heat for a long time, therefore, for the construction of wooden surfaces that often come into contact with bare areas of our body, it is best to use porous wood. The most common species used for constructing such surfaces is aspen.

Electric heaters are used as heaters, which can be equipped with additional software. This allows you to program the sauna at a time convenient for you, so when you come home, a preheated sauna is waiting for you. It is also worth paying attention to the peculiarity of the ventilation device in the Swedish sauna, which ensures good air circulation inside without losing heat.

To complete the “Bastu” device, it is necessary to install a wooden pool, purchase wooden buckets and knapsacks, and hang original lamps. Further improvement of the sauna depends only on the preferences of the owner, so strive to create a comfortable Swedish sauna.
