Sauna on wheels: types and design features

IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT BEHIND THE FACADE OF A SMALL HOUSE WITH A “TIME-TIMBER EXTERIOR” IS A UNIVERSAL BODY USED IN THE ARMY.
NOW IT HAS A BATH-BATH WITH AN EXCELLENT STEAM ROOM. Even at the very beginning of the development of our site, when we had just started building a country house, we managed to purchase a decommissioned military KUNG . The product is truly universal - we adapted it for temporary living and storing tools. When the main buildings were completed, the question arose about the future fate of the trailer. I desperately didn’t want to part with him. It was strong, there was insulation in the walls, and I thought about how to give it a second, no, even a third life, turning it into a bathhouse, which I had long dreamed of!

What is needed to organize a sauna on wheels as a business: important points

The popularity of baths has increased significantly recently. If previously it was exclusively a place where you can wash, now it is considered as a relaxation area. Many people decide to use it to relax in the company of friends and improve their health. Considering on wheels as a business, it is worth knowing that opening your own business is carried out in the following sequence:

  • the base on which the structure will be located is selected. Most often, the choice is made in favor of the ZIL 131, GAZ 53 and other vehicles that have sufficient reliability and good maneuverability. You can buy a GAZ 66 for a bathhouse on wheels. Featuring good cross-country ability, this equipment will allow you to set up a steam room for 6 people;
  • A project for the future building is being developed and its layout is being worked out. It is advisable to provide not only a steam room, but also a relaxation room;
  • activity for the provision of services is registered. The majority are registered as individual entrepreneurs. To put it into operation, you will have to prepare a certain package of documents, including permission from the SES, traffic police, and firefighters;
  • an advertising campaign is carried out;
  • business starts.

Advice!

Draw up a business plan to assess the risks of opening a sauna on wheels.

Bathhouses on wheels, placed on different types of bases, with photo examples

If you decide to become an owner on wheels, photos of completed projects can be used as an idea for subsequent implementation. We offer you to look at mobile buildings erected at various bases.

Sauna on wheels on a trailer for a car

If we are not talking about your own business, you can consider this option. For personal use, a trailer with a sauna on wheels is best suited. When designing it, it is important to take into account the carrying capacity of a passenger car. Additional supports will prevent the structure from swaying during operation.

Such buildings usually include a steam room and a dressing room. Due to their limited carrying capacity, they can only be used near bodies of water. We have prepared photos for you so that you can evaluate what such steam rooms look like.

Mobile sauna on wheels on all-terrain trucks

Having decided to start your own business, you should consider using all-terrain vehicles/trucks as a base. Such a mobile bathhouse on wheels will be able to get to places where other equipment cannot go.

Mobile sauna on wheels on a platform frame

A practical and concise option. Such a mobile sauna on wheels is in demand because it can be loaded and removed as needed.

Mobile sauna on wheels in buses and minibuses

If you need a large steam room and relaxation room, you should consider a bus as a base. Often a mobile bathhouse on wheels is made on the basis of Ikarus. In such a bathhouse, up to 15 people can wash at the same time. It includes:

  • steam room for 5 – 7 people;
  • shower;
  • dressing room;
  • rest room;
  • toilet;
  • kitchenette.

A gazelle bathhouse has a smaller capacity, however, it is still in demand among consumers.

Features, pros and cons

The autobath was invented about 40 years ago by Finnish students. Since then, it has undergone a number of changes and has gained popularity among many avid travelers. In addition to those who like to spend weekends outside the city, in nature, a mobile sauna is an indispensable purchase for those who spend several days fishing or hunting. In addition, organizing a mobile bathhouse can become a profitable business.

With the help of a mobile bathhouse you can solve some of the everyday problems when building a country house.

A sauna on wheels has a number of advantages:

  1. It is environmentally friendly, as wood is used for its construction.
  2. Installation of the structure does not require special professional skills.
  3. It is comfortable, no different from a regular stationary bath.
  4. Functional. To build a bathhouse, you can use almost any vehicle and stop in any convenient place.
  5. Heated by various types of fuel: wood, electricity, gas.
  6. There is no need to search for land to build a structure.
  7. Easy to use and maintain.
  8. Can serve as an additional source of income.

The only disadvantage of a bathhouse on wheels is the lack of space for a container of water. Therefore, the ideal place to stop vehicles is the nearest body of water.

Making a sauna on wheels with your own hands

If you decide to become the owner of a mobile building, we suggest you learn how to make one on wheels yourself. Knowing the sequence of actions and the main stages, you can do everything yourself. In this case, a bathhouse on wheels will fully meet the requirements for it and have suitable characteristics.

Design and layout

Before the assembly of the future structure begins, a project must be developed. You can sketch a sketch by hand or use a special one. The latter option is preferable, as it allows you to estimate the proportions of the future and accurately calculate the required amount of material. We take into account the price of the materials for the bathhouse on wheels that are to be purchased. At the design stage the following is calculated:

Stove installation

The firebox should be placed outside. This will make the structure safer and allow for more efficient management of the internal space. It is preferable with a tank for water or a heater, for which a platform has been previously equipped. The mobile steam room can be heated up to +60°C. In stones used to generate steam, it is worth drilling holes and connecting them with wire. This will prevent an accidental fall when the wheel hits a bump.

Interior decoration

For after completion of thermal insulation work. It is worth giving preference to lining made from alder, aspen or linden. It is acceptable to use ordinary treated boards or block houses. Coniferous species can be used to decorate the dressing room. You can often see tiles on shower walls. In any case, there should be boards on the floor.

Attention!

All decorative items and furniture must be securely fixed to prevent them from moving while the car is moving.

External skin

To finish the outer wall, you can use high-quality wood. This will add similarity between the mobile structure and the stationary one. The door should open.

Advice!

Carved wooden steps and beautifully decorated windows will make the bathhouse more charming.

Installation of a sauna on wheels at the location

The installation begins by uncoupling the bathhouse on wheels and the car. To ensure sufficient stability of the trailer sauna, a leg-support is fixed, as well as three additional supports. After this, the side is folded back and the ladder is lowered. To install a steam room on the base of a truck or bus, just find a relatively flat area and simply turn off the engine.

In order for the mobile sauna to last as long as possible, you should follow certain recommendations when using it. You should:

  • separate the time between driving on the road and being in the steam room. This will avoid accidental falls and burns;
  • disconnect the transport from the bathhouse for the entire period of operation;
  • design the bathhouse as a vehicle so that there are no difficulties when driving on the road.

Review of prices per hour of using a sauna on wheels

The price of a barrel sauna on wheels may seem too high to many. Many people refuse to purchase because there is a stationary design. If you want to spend time with friends in nature, then you can simply rent it.

What the price for an hour of a bathhouse on wheels will be will depend on the rental period and the place where it needs to be delivered. On average, for the first 3 hours you will have to pay at least 3,000 rubles per hour. For the fourth and fifth - 2,500 rubles each, for the subsequent ones - 2,000 rubles. After 10 hours the rent will drop to 1,000 rubles/hour. If you decide to buy or order a sauna on wheels, share in the comments which option you preferred and why.

What could be better than relaxing with friends on a fishing trip and a sauna right on the river bank? Recently, this seemed completely impossible, but recently in Russia a mobile bathhouse and sauna on wheels has become common.

You can find mobile steam rooms on wheels in many large cities, but the price per hour is 800-1000 rubles per hour. In this article we will tell you how you can make a mobile steam room, which you can use both at home and on a hike, or rent it out.

conclusions

The proposed option of combining a bathhouse and a utility room is far from the only one. Therefore, the instructions for action here will be traditional for the construction market - first, be sure to conduct research and choose the most suitable option that satisfies all your wishes and placement conditions.

If it were not for the increased demands, not even on the strength, but on the quality of the bathhouse foundation, perhaps it would be recommended to try to do everything yourself. But since the specifics of building baths require experience and qualifications, we advise you to contact professionals who work with already proven project samples.

In the photo, everything was placed on a tubular pile foundation - for a bathhouse this is the best option in terms of preserving the structure for many years

The video in this article may still be able to convince you, in order to save space, to combine a bathhouse with a utility room, if you were unable to solve the placement problem in another way.

Converting a car booth into a bathhouse

Even old cars can be used as a basis for a car bath. The most popular are Soviet army vehicles with kung - GAZ 66 or ZIL 131, they have high cross-country ability, but high fuel consumption. Mobile saunas are also made on the basis of ordinary trailers for cars.

The kung has a large area, so its capacity can reach up to 6 people. Additional insulation will allow it to be used all year round. The photo shows examples of a mobile, dressing room, changing room, lounger, folding table and bench.

For an ordinary wood stove it is small. If you order this option from specialists, then turnkey conversion will cost you at least 140 thousand rubles.

In terms of performance, mobile bathhouses built on the basis of the GAZ 66 will not differ much from the classic types: on average, the transported volume of water is 700 liters, and the supply of firewood is enough for a whole day of heating. This is enough for 15-20 people to relax, so many people began to open a similar business.

Furnace installation

For convenience and space saving, the firebox goes outside.

The surface around the stove inside and outside must be finished with non-flammable, heat-resistant material.

Advice! To prevent them from accidentally falling out while driving, they can be sewn into beads with wire in advance. Since their weight can reach 300 kg, to reduce the load they can be completely removed while driving into another car.

Exterior decoration of the bath

  • To get a beautiful appearance, the outside of the wall can be finished with a house block.
  • It is better not to make windows, as a lot of heat will be lost through them. If you decide to make windows, try to reduce their area and use 3-layer double-glazed windows with glass at least 6 mm thick.
  • The door should open outwards.
  • To save space, the woodcutter and water containers are mounted externally in boxes under the bottom of the kung.

Interior decoration

Inside, the walls are insulated exactly the same as in a regular sauna.

Instructions for interior wall decoration:

  • A sheathing of antiseptic-impregnated bars is attached to the walls every 60 cm. In kungs they are attached directly to the walls, and in trailers a metal welded frame is first made and sheathed with wood.
  • The first layer of waterproofing is attached. To do this, you can use a vapor barrier membrane, for example Izospan. On the one hand, it will not allow moisture to pass through, and on the other, it will remove steam, preventing it from accumulating inside.
  • Then, mineral wool insulation is placed tightly together in the cells of the frame. Additionally, it is recommended to attach it to the walls using umbrella dowels.
  • The top of the insulation is covered with the same vapor barrier. Heat-reflecting aluminum foil can also be used instead. The insulation joints must be taped with aluminum tape.
  • To maintain a ventilation gap under the sheathing, an additional counter-lattice 2-3 cm thick is screwed onto the bars.
  • Then the frame is covered with clapboard or block house.
  • Particular attention should be paid to securing furniture and the stove so that they are securely fixed while moving.
  • To save space, you can use folding shelves, folding tables and benches.
  • Lighting is done from a 12-volt car battery, or a separate 220-volt generator is used.

Note! For lighting, you need to use moisture-proof and heat-proof lamps, and the wiring must be heat-resistant. Ordinary wires cannot withstand temperatures above 50 degrees, but in a bath it can exceed 150 degrees in some areas.

The bathhouse is coming, Vanya is in the bathhouse

A new service is gaining popularity in Russia – on-call bathhouse. To go over your body with a broom, you no longer need to travel far and wide. The steam room can be delivered directly to your home. It’s good for everyone: some worry about it, others make money from it.

"ZIL-Banych"

62-year-old Muscovite Tatyana Tyukhova from Kuzminki has a tradition: every year on December 23, her birthday, she goes to the bathhouse with her friends. This winter, the tradition was broken - women did not go to take a steam bath. Bathhouse came to Tyukhova’s high-rise building on her own.

– Usually the girls and I went to the bathhouse by minibus, then by metro. This, of course, is a little tiring,” says the pensioner. – And then I came across an advertisement on the Internet that you can call a steam room directly to your home. So I decided to surprise myself and my friends.

Not only the girlfriends - the whole house was surprised when a truck with a smoking chimney, a van painted to look like a log house, and the inscriptions on the sides “Steam room on wheels” and “ZIL-Banych” drove into the yard. The car parked carefully near the entrance, and the birthday girl, accompanied by guests, marched towards it with an important air.

“The neighbor, with whom we have been at loggerheads for a long time, became jealous, even called me a millionaire,” Tyukhova laughs. – Although in fact, calling a bathhouse to your home was not that expensive - 1,500 rubles per hour. My son sponsored me. True, the steam room seemed a little cramped to me, but overall I liked it.

The delivery of the steam room to Tyukhova’s house was organized by two entrepreneurs from the town of Dzerzhinsky near Moscow - Mikhail Grabovsky and Sergey Maslovsky. They converted a serious car - an army ZIL-131 - into a bathhouse. That’s why their bath business is respectfully called “ZIL-Banych”.

“I got sick and daydreamed”

The idea for the autobahn was born by Grabovsky and Maslovsky while fishing. Both of them are avid fishermen; they have traveled around half of Russia in search of “cool” places. In 2009, we went for pike to the Astrakhan region...

“It was already late autumn,” Mikhail recalls. “It started to rain, and we were soaked to the skin by the river.” The next day I fell ill. Now, I think, if we had a mobile home in which we could drive straight to the river, then I wouldn’t get sick - I’d come in to warm up...

Sergei Maslovsky also liked the idea of a mobile home. And he developed it, remembering the ability of the Russian steam room to remove illness from people. The fantasy of the motorhome transformed into the dream of the autobahn. In addition, the opportunity arose to purchase a military ZIL, which was mothballed in the unit and was due to be written off.

Here it is necessary to clarify: “conservation” in the language of the military means “responsible storage.” Most of the military equipment is stored in this way. She leaves the garages at most a couple of times a year for regimental exercises. The rest of the time, her soldiers are groomed and cherished: they are lubricated with oil, the nuts are tightened, so that if war happens, the equipment will not fail. Every 15 years, the army vehicle fleet is renewed: vehicles that have not run even 10 thousand kilometers are put up for auction.

– And the ZIL-131 is a beast. And it has the right size, and can easily overcome any off-road conditions. Just the thing for a fishing trip to remote places! – Sergei boasts. “But there was no talk of any business at that time.” We were going to equip a bathhouse for personal use so that we could go outdoors. But when they started thinking about how to install a real wood-burning stove in ZIL, they found out that mobile baths are a whole business line. And in Russia there are companies where specialists will even attach a steam room to a bicycle.

Finnish chip

Grabovsky and Maslovsky found one of these companies that install baths on any platform - be it a Gazelle or a KAMAZ - in Izhevsk. Its director, Denis Smolin, remembers his customers from the Moscow region, although they were not the first and far from the last. Cars with steam rooms from Izhevsk travel around Stavropol, Volgograd, Perm, Yekaterinburg, and Chelyabinsk.

– There were orders from Siberia for oil workers who work on a rotational basis. I know that there are bathhouses on wheels, although not mine, in Ryazan, Barnaul, Tomsk, Omsk, Vladimir,” says Denis. By the way, he does not consider himself a pioneer in the field of mobile sauna industry - he honestly admits that he came across the idea in Finland. He clarifies: only the Finns have saunas, not steam rooms.

The bath business, according to Smolin, can be conducted in two directions at once. The first is serving ordinary clients who want to take a steam bath in a bathhouse on wheels without leaving their home. The second is servicing corporate events related to outdoor activities. His company offers two sets of bath equipment: the first, minimal, costs 300 thousand rubles. The van is divided into a dressing room and a steam room, where a stove and water tanks are installed, but the walls and floor are not insulated. They are usually ordered for personal use.

“But for business, significant changes are needed to make the client comfortable,” explains Smolin. So, in the van of the ZIL-Banych near Moscow, Smolin’s specialists raised the roof so that the ceiling height inside was 230 centimeters and customers could stand quietly without bending over and without risking hitting their heads on something. Then a gas generator was installed to illuminate the bathhouse, and the walls were insulated. Inside, the van was divided into a steam room, upholstered with linden slats, and a dressing room, lined with pine. In the dressing room there is a heated floor, a sofa, a table, two armchairs, a tape recorder, a TV, and a locker for clothes. In the steam room they placed a tank with cold water for 300 liters and hot water for 55, and a drain was arranged. The conversion took a month, and this option cost more than 400 thousand rubles. According to Smolin, any car can be converted into a bathhouse or you can buy a ready-made one.

– For example, a used ZIL with a bathhouse costs from 700 thousand rubles, GAZ-66 is cheaper, 500 thousand. But before diving headlong into the bath business, I always suggest that customers carefully weigh everything so as not to burn out,” Denis warns. – It is clear that this is a small business and future entrepreneurs cannot conduct serious market research in their city. But photocopying a stack of questionnaires with three or four questions, one of which would sound, say, like this: “Would you like to order a steam room for your home?”, and then asking people to fill them out, is still worth it. It may take a week, but it will become clear whether there will be demand for the service.

“We immediately understood: there will be demand”

The owners of ZIL-Banych near Moscow did not think about the directions of their future business, nor did they conduct surveys.

“Yes, as soon as we left the company’s gates, we immediately realized that there would be demand,” Mikhail Grabovsky laughs. – I was stopped at every traffic police post. They didn’t ask for documents - they immediately asked to show the bathhouse. We examined how and what works here.

According to the entrepreneur, he and his partner did not invest in advertising either. In order for people to start ordering a bathhouse, all it took was a simple website with an advertisement, which a friend made at their request, and several trips around their hometown.

“But we don’t go to all calls, but only within a radius of 20 kilometers, because the car still consumes a lot of gasoline,” says Mikhail. – If the order is from afar, we also agree on payment for fuel. But a broom, tea, firewood for the stove are at our expense. Eh, why am I just saying this?! You should experience the bathhouse! And I experienced it. He undressed, put on his parka and steamed to his heart's content. And now I’m writing these lines and thinking: I, of course, won’t be able to handle the bathhouse business - that requires an entrepreneurial spirit. But I definitely wouldn’t refuse a car bath on the weekend!

How to make money on the autobahn

A sauna on wheels is a troublesome business. But even if you only have two hour-long calls a day, the investment will pay off within a year. Below are calculations for Moscow and the region, provided that you work as an individual entrepreneur (IP).

Expenses:

Ready-made sauna on wheels based on ZIL-131 – 700 thousand rubles.

The single imputed tax is 3,000 rubles per quarter, 12 thousand per year.

Round birch firewood for two kindlings – 200 rubles. Per year – 73 thousand rubles.

Broom 2 pieces – 100 rubles. Per year – 36,500.

Total: in the first year - 821,500 rubles. Then the cost of the bathhouse itself can be ignored, it paid off!

Profit:

The cost of 1 hour on the autobahn is 1,500 rubles.

Total: 1 million 95 thousand rubles.

Nuances:

The fuel consumption of the ZIL-131 is 40 liters per 100 km.

The fuel consumption of the GAZ-66 is 25 liters per 100 km.

Autobath on wheels: advantages

Popular wisdom states that any material can be used to make a steam room, from a tarpaulin awning of a tent to a wooden cabin of an old refrigerator. The main thing is to properly and safely equip the stove with a heater and make high-quality thermal insulation of the room. These are all temporary options. They are not very suitable for a good autobahn on wheels, and are almost never used even by fans of relaxing in a steam room.

Modern mobile bathhouses on wheels differ little in terms of comfort from stationary options. Among the disadvantages, one can cite only a limited amount of space for the washing compartment; it is most often sacrificed in favor of the steam room and dressing room. In all other respects, the autobahn soars and treats no worse than a hospital.

There may be several reasons for building or purchasing a mobile sauna on wheels:

Advice! The opportunity to relax and take a steam bath on a trailer in the evening, after construction work during the day under the summer sun, solves half of everyday problems.

Especially if there is nothing on the site except a pit and a water well, and a team of builders hired to work in an open field will always require acceptable living conditions. For the winter or at the end of the season, a trailer with a sauna can be towed to a parking lot near the house or to a garage, and a car sauna with a steam room can be used even in urban conditions.

Bathhouse from a gun carriage

In villages, in simple language, truck trailers are called carriages. For bathhouse builders, a carriage is a round timber hewn on both sides. The material is also called “two-roll timber”. The carriage was invented by the Norwegians. They came up with the idea of a strong locking connection. The docked carriage does not allow heat to pass through and ensures reliable stability of the walls of the bathhouse.

Laft baths have a number of advantages, but there are also several disadvantages.

Positive features:

  1. The carriage is environmentally friendly. Wood does not emit chemical impurities in the bath, creates an aroma, and maintains a special microclimate.
  2. The locking connection of the carriage is considered one of the most durable. The walls of the bathhouse are not deformed in dampness or after drying. There are no gaps between the carriage.
  3. The appearance of the carriage has natural beauty. There is no need to additionally line the outside of the bathhouse.
  4. For the carriage, logs with a thickness of about 400 mm are used. Such a bath wall reliably retains heat without additional thermal insulation.
  5. The carriage inside the bathhouse is beautiful. The walls do not need to be sheathed with anything additional.
  6. The price of the carriage will seem high to many, but the construction of a bathhouse will be cheaper due to the absence of the need for additional interior and exterior decoration.
  7. If we compare two identical bathhouses made of a carriage and a rounded log, then the first building turns out to be more spacious.
  8. The walls made from gun carriages are lightweight. There is no need to pour a powerful foundation under the bathhouse.

Among the shortcomings of construction from a gun carriage, 3 important points are identified:

  1. The carriage is susceptible to rotting faster than a log. The problem is the hewn sides. The core of the tree is exposed, which is less resistant to moisture. To increase service life, the carriage is often and carefully treated with protective impregnations.
  2. The cost of a bathhouse built from a gun carriage will be cheaper when compared with stone buildings that require interior and exterior finishing. In other cases, the costs will be higher. Construction from logs or beams will cost less than a similar option from a gun carriage.
  3. An important drawback is the appearance of cracks on the carriage. However, not a single tree is immune from this problem. The cracks in the carriage are not through.

In terms of speed and ease of construction, timber construction wins. In the carriage there is a difficulty in making the locking connection.

Advice! It is better to buy a bathhouse carriage with ready-made locks.

A bathhouse is assembled from a gun carriage in the same way as a construction made from timber or logs. First, the foundation is poured, the walls and roof are installed, and the interior space is arranged. The difference in construction is the assembly of walls from gun carriages. Logs are used from coniferous trees. To make a carriage yourself, the round timber is dried. Pre-made longitudinal cuts will eliminate the appearance of cracks. The shrinkage of logs for carriages after drying reaches from 5 to 15 cm.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with How to properly make a steam room in a Russian bath

The corner connection of the carriage has a similar pattern to the Russian bathhouse. The edges are made with protruding ends. However, according to the Russian system, the lock of the bathhouse logs has a semicircular shape, and a secret wedge is made on the gun carriage. It goes inside the groove of the lower crown of the bathhouse.

The semicircular connecting lock of the Russian bath is connected to the insulation lining. The carriage wedge fits tightly into the groove. Without insulation, a castle according to the Norwegian system does not allow cold to pass through. The lower crown of the bath is laid on a 60 mm thick embedded board. The initial assembly of the log house is carried out without dowels. Major assembly is performed after errors are eliminated.

Important! If ventilation slots can be arranged between the logs, then the number will not work with a gun carriage. The air is left under the roof of the bathhouse.

The construction of the carriage is difficult only in construction. In all other matters, the bathhouse wins.

Mobile sauna on wheels: types

Of course, there are quite a lot of options for a bathhouse in a car or on a trailer, and they are all very different. There are options for industrially manufactured mobile steam rooms.

In addition to expensive factory assembly, you can buy a homemade bathhouse for GAZ 66 from small companies. There are many models of mobile steam baths based on residential trailers, kungs, buses, old repair shops and simply single-axle trailers for a passenger car converted into a bathhouse. Autobaths can vary in price and provide completely different levels of comfort for bathing procedures.

Sauna on a trailer

For the average user, the best choice would be an autobahn on a two-axle carriage. In the simplest version, this can be a version of a mobile bathhouse - a trailer on wheels with a two-axle configuration. It is also called trailer for its low ground clearance and good stability. A trailer-mounted bathhouse rarely exceeds 2.5-2.8 m in length and 180 cm in width.

The maximum weight does not exceed 700 kg. The design of the bathhouse trailer uses a cladding made of metal siding under timber or logs. It is impossible to leave OSB or plywood uncovered from the wind; when moving, the oncoming wind flow, and even with rain, very quickly renders the wooden surface unusable.

The advantages of a bathhouse on a trailer include:

  • Compact, a car with a mobile steam room can drive along any routes and roads, without restrictions;
  • No permits are needed to convert the carriage into a bathhouse trailer, the main thing is that the axle load and external dimensions do not go beyond the permitted limits;
  • Low price and the opportunity to build a mobile sauna with your own hands. The average cost for re-equipping a trailer is 40% of the cost of building a stationary version of the steam room.

For your information! For a mobile steam room, it is recommended to use two-axle trailers, since a mobile steam bath turns out to be unstable on one pair of wheels, even if it is attached to a car tow bar.

The most luxurious bathhouses are made on the basis of a trailer or semi-trailer attached to a truck tractor. In essence, this is an ordinary autobath installed on a car platform. The price of a bathhouse measuring 3.4x8 m on a three-axle trailer is 8-9 thousand dollars.

The best mobile saunas are made from full-size travel trailers - trailers and camper vans. A simple used trailer of the “Hobby Prestige” type will cost 2-2.5 thousand dollars. For the equipment of the steam room and installation of the stove, another 300-400 dollars, and the mobile autobath will be able to serve for another twenty years.

Bathhouse on the bus

Of course, a new mobile home costs twice as much as any bathhouse. For example, a good Mc Louis 2000 made by Fiat Ducato is estimated at 10-12 thousand dollars, but this is no longer a trailer, but rather a full-fledged bus, equipped with everything necessary for living. You can equip it with a steam room, and the mobile autobath will be able to perform three functions at once:

Moreover, unlike a bulky trailer, the bus bathhouse already has a factory-built toilet, shower, refrigerator, and stove with a gas cylinder. All that remains is to separate part of the space and convert it into a steam room.

PAZ 3205 buses are being successfully converted into a bathhouse, photo.

Thanks to the use of a domestic base, such a bathhouse costs even less than a trailer or trailer of a similar class, approximately 5-6 thousand dollars.

There is also an autobath based on Ikarus and LIAZ vehicles, but city buses are not suitable for arranging a comfortable steam room. The carriage proportions and heavy metal frame quickly cool down the room.

Bathhouse based on GAZ 66

Of all the existing auto versions of a mobile sauna, a steam room based on a “lawn” is rightly considered one of the best, especially if room comfort and high vehicle cross-country ability are required.

The GAZ 66 sauna on wheels will go over any off-road terrain; in fact, the “lawn” is best suited for conversion into a mobile steam room:

  • The aluminum kung or booth is insulated with foam plastic; the propulsion system has a built-in industrial voltage electric current generator;
  • The design of the machine has a built-in diesel heater - a heater that can easily raise it in 10 minutes. steam room temperature to the required 80 o C;
  • The powerful machine is capable of transporting a trailer with a residential module, a mobile electrical installation or a refrigerator.

According to reviews from fishermen and hunters, instead of SUVs and UAZs, it is the autobahn equipped on the GAZ 66 base that is increasingly used for outdoor activities, video

Bathhouse from a GAZ-66 booth

Question:

Good day! There was an old GAZ-66 booth with all sorts of rubbish. I decided to make a steam room out of it, dismantled the old insulation (foam plastic), cut off all the rusty floors, and extended it with a corner to 2.20 meters. so that you can stand at full height and take a steam bath on the second bench. I covered it with metal from the street and everything fell into place because I don’t know the procedure for insulation and how to actually insulate it. Please tell me, if I lay the isover (layers?) on the metal, then attach the 8mm plywood (primed?) with self-tapping screws with a drill and a press washer directly to the metal, after which I cover it with penofol A-03 single-sided, and after all the euro paneling is attached through penofol to plywood using self-tapping screws (euro lining C - larch). I simply have all the listed material in stock. Please correct me if I suddenly want to do something wrong. The bathhouse is planned to be used in the summer.

Best regards, Alexander, Magadan.

Answer:

Hello, Alexander from “sunny” Magadan!

Think in the right direction; the desire to build a small bathhouse on the basis of an existing old and somewhat converted “GAZON” booth is quite natural. Moreover, in addition there are also materials.

Over the past year, a couple of times I came across reports in the media about mobile bathhouses made according to the same design as the one you are planning. As for stationary similar baths, they are sometimes found in our vast expanses. They are made, of course, not for big money, but because of the availability of retired automobiles.

The most commonly used vehicles are military trucks, emergency vehicles and grain delivery vans.

The thickness of the insulation layer for such baths is 50 or 100 millimeters. And it depends not so much on how effectively the heat will be retained (for the summer season, both options are quite suitable), but on the design features of the existing booth.

That is, if the width of the frame racks made of a metal profile is about 50 millimeters, then the isover type insulation is placed in one 50 mm layer. It will completely fill the space between the outer and inner walls. Well, if the width of the racks is 100 millimeters, then the isover, as a rule, is laid in two layers of 50, which in total will be the required 100 millimeters.

Construction literature recommends creating an air gap of about 30-50 millimeters between the metal and the insulation so that condensation formed on the inner wall, especially metal, does not come into contact with the insulation.

Shabashniks, as a rule, do not follow these recommendations. Instead, they attach thermal film (in any way, including glue) to the inner metal side of the wall. The smooth outer side of the film is placed against the metal, and the rough side is against the insulation. One roll of film is quite enough, their area reaches almost 70 square meters, and it costs from one and a half to two thousand rubles. Although yours is probably more expensive.

Then, after some time, the fasteners may come off, but the film will still be pressed against the metal by the insulation and will not go anywhere.

And sometimes they don’t put any film at all, anyway, such a bathhouse will be enough for at least a dozen years of operation, or even more.

Of course, you can use plywood (there is no need to transfer soil onto it, extra fumes are not entirely useful), but it is much preferable to use ordinary edged or even unedged boards without wane.

All the same, plywood for baths, due to its instability to high temperatures, will begin to delaminate after a short time. With all the ensuing negatives.

Fastening with self-tapping screws and press washers is a completely normal option, if the thickness of the metal of the racks allows it. If this does not work, then pre-drill holes at the fastening points of a slightly smaller diameter than the diameter of the screws.

And only then do they tighten the screws.

Then you can do everything according to your option - cover it with penofol, or you can just use foil. Next, cover it with clapboard. Although class C is not the best option, if there are a large number of knots, and in such low-grade lining there are usually plenty of them, they can fly out after some time due to temperature changes.

The lining is often secured with ordinary galvanized nails without heads. 30-40 millimeters long. Although, if you still choose plywood rather than boards, if the plywood is very dense, thin nails may bend when driven in.

The self-tapping screws used to fasten the lining must be sunk into the wood, otherwise their heads will burn the body at high temperatures, especially in those places that are in the zone of intense contact.

Since the lining is very thin, the self-tapping screws, when heated (a term meaning that the surface of the screw will be lower than the surface of the lining) can split the lining. However, try it, what if everything turns out okay?

Before lining the inside of the steam room with clapboard, it must be dried very well. Very often in steam rooms we observe such a thing - after some, sometimes a long time, the lining dries out and cracks appear. It is not fatal; although foil or penofol will appear from behind the lining, it will still work functionally. Only the aesthetic appearance will be compromised. I don’t say which side the penofol is placed on the lining, otherwise you will be offended.

Since you do not address the question of how your structure will be heated, with a stove or electric heaters, we will remain silent about them. The only thing I would like to remind you is to make sure to make a small window in the wall. It will be very useful later, take my word for it without explanation.

So go ahead, build a sauna or steam room from what you have.

Good luck!

Autobath: design

Couple car models have been in production for a long time. The most important details of the layout - the design of the body or trailer, the optimal location of the sauna, shower and washing compartments, heating stove and heater - have long been successfully tested and honed in practice over many years of operation.

When planning car baths, the following rules are used:

  • The paired compartment with the stove is located in the “tail” of the car booth or kung, away from the fuel tank;
  • A water supply and a shower stall are installed in the center of the room;
  • The wooden body of the bathhouse must be sheathed on the outside with sheet metal.

Wooden saunas burn frequently and quickly; a car sauna, regardless of whether the structure is built on a trailer or on the body of a car, is susceptible to fire much more often than stationary options.

For your information! Wood-burning stoves can only be used for a bathhouse assembled on a two-axle trailer with a steam room area of more than 3.5 m2. In all other cases, the autobath is heated with gas heaters.

Below is a layout option for a five-ton two-axle trailer or on a category “C” vehicle chassis

DIY sauna on wheels

The easiest way to build a small mobile autobath is based on a standard trailer for a passenger car. Building a mobile sauna with your own hands is no more difficult, and in some ways simpler than a regular backyard sauna for two or three people.

Installation of the structure

First of all, you need to choose the right trailer for your future steam room. Of all the models of small trailers, the best autobahn will be made from two-axle designs with 12 or 13-inch wheel sizes.

This choice is dictated by very practical considerations:

  • Firstly, the autobahn is reduced in overall height. The higher the structure, the greater its windage. While driving, in strong winds, a car that is too high can overturn the car;
  • Secondly, the bathhouse frame is made only using a frame method from a metal or wooden profile, no timber or log frames;
  • The sauna stove is used only as a closed type. The firebox doors and chimney pipe must lead to the outer rear wall.

Initially, a bathhouse frame is welded from a corner or square on a trailer. The lower part and floor are reinforced with striped oak boards. The frame of the bathhouse is welded to the trailer side members with a continuous seam.

In the design of the frame, you immediately need to provide a niche for the heater and a cavity for installing a gas cylinder; if the autobath is on an independent trailer, then you will also need a battery.

Typically, a car fuel cylinder is used, suspended from the front wall of the bathhouse so that the gas can be shut off both from the street and indoors.

The frame is covered with OSB boards and mineral wool insulation.

Exterior finishing

After laying the insulation package, the outer surface of the autobath is sheathed with sheet material; you can use waterproof plywood or OSB sheets.

To protect from rain and wind, the box and roof of the bathhouse can be covered with metal profiles in the color of the trailer and the overall building.

If a mobile autobath is used only during the summer season, and is transported along the roads on a trailer no more than two or three times a year, in this case the bathhouse body can be assembled from timber, and after treating with an antiseptic, do not line the box with clapboard or siding.

Interior design

The walls of the steam room and dressing room of the bathhouse are traditionally lined with linden and pine clapboards, respectively. The inside of the autobath can be lined with plastic or plasterboard; it is better to use such material only on the ceiling and floor covering.

In this case, the space around the sauna heater must be lined with vermiculite thermal insulation, and the floor is laid with unpolished porcelain tiles.

Installation of stiffeners and assembly of the frame for a bathhouse on wheels

The technical part of arranging a bathhouse should begin with the dismantling of all unnecessary elements.
It is also worth taking care of the power frame, because the structure will regularly experience significant load. On the basis of the load-bearing frame, metal profiles are welded and stiffeners are secured. If a mobile bathhouse is installed in a car trailer, it is more convenient to assemble the frame from ready-made elements; they can be ordered or made by yourself.

When assembling the frame for a transportable bathhouse, you must:

  • Assemble the floor from boards and support joists;
  • Attach the floor components to the base (trailer);
  • Install timber under the wall elements;
  • Assemble the walls;
  • Install roof support beams and rafter system;
  • Complete roof installation.

The roof is covered only after the installation of the stove is completed. The same applies to complete interior and exterior decoration. Using heat-resistant wiring, electric lighting is installed, for which water-insulating and heat-resistant lighting devices are used.

Oven for a mobile sauna

A small-sized mobile autobath is heated using three types of heating devices:

You can make a stove for a mobile sauna with your own hands, but it is better to use industrial models, for example, propane heat generators or a long-burning briquette stove. Any gasoline, diesel, or alcohol homemade burners and heaters mean that a wooden sauna on a trailer will burn out in the first year of operation.

Documentation

Most often, a car bath on a trailer is not documented with any documents indicating that the structure has been altered. Companies that produce mobile steam rooms indicate in the documents for the trailer information about the presence of an easily removable rigid awning of the frame system.

The situation is more complicated if the autobahn is converted from an old bus or car. In this case, the law requires changes to the description of the vehicle. Now, according to the documents, the autobahn is listed as a mobile residential building. If during the alteration the windows were not cut out, the power elements of the body, truck, or chassis were not changed, then perhaps the car will not need to be re-registered.
